Praying Mantis

Designed in 1950 by François Rispal, the Praying Mantis embodies the creative audacity of Rispal. A true manifesto of post-war French design, it remains today one of the most recognizables ilhouettes in 20th-century lighting design. Its origins can likely be traced back to the influence of the Dadaist sculptor Jean Arp who lived in Clamart, near the Rispal family’s home.

Savoir-faire

The lampshade of the Praying Mantis is made of pleated cellulose acetate. This renewable material is created from cotton fiber and does not use any oil in its manufacture. The technique used to shape this lampshade is a unique process developed by Rispal in the 1950s, and its secret is still closely guarded.

Heritage

In chromed or polished brass, the branded screw covers match the different wood types. Thefabric cord, integrated into the central groove, is available in several colors.

Arp’s organic, abstract forms, blurring the line between art and nature, were foundational to the biomorphic movement, inspiring many artists and designers in the early to mid-20th century.
